On the occasion of the bicentenary of Bedřich Smetana’s birth, the Zdeněk Sklenář Gallery in Litomyšl will present another world-famous Czech artist. It is the painter František Kupka (1871-1957). Unlike Bedřich Smetana, František Kupka spent most of his life in France, and therefore fell into near oblivion in his homeland for many years. His impressive oeuvre remains shrouded in unanswered questions, relating mainly to the period of his creative rise. Originally a brilliant realist, he was able to transform himself into a pioneer of abstraction and imaginatively compete with Piet Mondrian and Vasily Kandinsky. After the initiating exhibitions of Kupka’s work in China, Mongolia, Cambodia and Thailand, the Zdeněk Sklenář Gallery continues to systematically collect and periodically present the painter’s work, and remind both local and foreign audiences of its importance.
The long-standing interest of the Zdeněk Sklenář Gallery in the so far neglected works of our great artists has led to the realisation of this exhibition.
