This exhibition is dedicated to a native of Litomyšl - the academic painter Josef Voleský (1895–1932), who dealt mainly with the painting of portraits and landscapes. Taking a portrait "by Voleský" was one of the privileges of the wealthier inhabitants of Litomyšl and its surroundings, so thanks to his paintings, we still look into the faces of local townspeople or industrialists, such as František Lašek, the mayor of Litomyšl, co-founder of the Town Gallery and the senior doctor of the local hospital, or František Háša, the owner of the first local hydroelectric power station. Portrait work provided Josef Voleský with financial security. However, the idea of the clients of the portraits often did not meet with the artist's conception of the modern portrait, which led Voleský to leave the custom-made portrait work in 1929. His interest then turned to the painting of floral still lives and especially to landscape painting. In the years 1930 and 1931, he repeatedly drove to the surroundings of Březin, a village surrounded by the hills of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, where he created balladlike views of the landscape, permeated by inner feelings of sadness and perhaps the painter's premonition of untimely death.
