14. 6. – 14. 9. 2025
The exhibition traces more than forty years of encounters between the collector Vilém Trmal (1949-2013) and the work of Josef Váchal (1884-1969). From the happenings during the times of deep normalisation, when he and other like-minded conspirators played ping-pong over his prints, to countless visits to bibliophiles, memorabilia collectors and antiquarians across the country, to discreet meetings with auction house owners.
The exhibition presents the resulting collection in a representative selection that includes, among others, early etchings of Seance or Frozen Waterfall, the iconic woodcuts Paradies(Paradise), Wedding of the Orcs, and Deadly Gas, the large-scale watercolours Dead Abbess, Self-Portrait, Váchal’s working copy of The Bloody Novel, Recipe Book of Colour Woodcuts and Šumava Dying and Romantic from the estate of Váchal’s life companion Anna Macková.
