Ninety years ago, the painter and graphic artist Josef Váchal published the book Šumava: Dying and Romantic, one of the most important works of Czech art and Czech literary culture of the 20th century. The artist Oldřich Hamera commemorates this anniversary with “makulaturas”; works that are made from the wasted paper of reprints of the book, which Ladislav Horáček decided to publish in 2008 at the Paseka publishing house. The term "makulatura" means a defective print or printout, a worthless printed matter or a book. Hamera "recycles" wasted paper. In his hands, these unnecessary press sheets turned into nooks of Šumava, memories not only of Váchal, but also of other masters of Czech graphics, such as Bohuslav Reynek, Vladimír Boudník or Jiří Kolář, who was the master of collage. Hamer's collages and assemblages are accompanied by a small Váchal's menagerie made by Eva Čapková. Among the exhibits, there will be a facsimile of Šumava by the Paseka publishing house, luxuriously bound in Lubomír and Miroslava Krupka's bookbinding.
